Louis van Gaal is hoping to add Everton defender John Stones to his defensive ranks this summer, as the Dutchman looks to develop his squad after a promising first season at Old Trafford.

According to the Daily Mail, the 21-year-old only agreed a new five year deal at Goodison Park last August, meaning that it may take a large bid for the Toffees to even consider selling one of their best players.
However, whatever asking price Roberto Martinez sets may not deter Manchester United, as in January the Daily Mirror reported that the Dutchman would be given £150m to spend this summer on bolstering his side.
While he may lack in experience, Stones certainly would be an exciting addition for the club, and a massive loss for the Merseyside outfit. The former Barnsley trainee has been very impressive for the side he joined in 2013, and now has a handful of England caps that he will surely be keen to add to as soon as possible.
And while his talent is undeniable, he has been a part of an Everton side that struggled to build upon the success of Martinez’s first year at the club. Their Europa League journey – which ended at the last 16 stage – seemed to have a negative impact on their league form as they were expected to play just days after returning from the likes of Ukraine and Russia. And without the luxury of a large squad, the manager was unable to give some his key players a rest.
Having finished 11th in the Premier League last year, they will not have the burden of continental competition to contend with this season, which will give the squad a much better opportunity to shine in the top flight, and potentially elevate themselves back into the top half of the table. However, should they fail to do so, they may find that some of their key players decide they need a new challenge if they wish to continue their international careers.
