Manchester United are so desperate to land Sergio Ramos, that they are willing to make the Real Madrid defender the joint-highest earner at the club.
According to the Daily Express, the Spain international will be offered a staggering £260,000 a week to move to Old Trafford.
The Express suggest that Ramos is currently unhappy at the Bernabeu, so perhaps United are hoping that this figure – which would see him earn the same amount as captain Wayne Rooney – will be enough to persuade him to head to the Premier League. Real will only be tempted to sell if they receive an offer of £50m.
However, the Express suggest that United are also concerned that Ramos will use their interest as a way of improving his current deal with the Spanish giants.
The move seems to be a brave one of Louis van Gaal’s part, especially as Ramos is now 29, and may only have a few years left at the very highest level.
His signing would also arguably render last season’s development pointless. Having had to watch as injuries decimated United’s back four early on in the campaign, their young team seemed to be developing an understanding as the season drew to a conclusion. And while Ramos will obviously improve what they have, it is bound to halt the progression of some of the other defenders.
