According to the Daily Mirror, Louis van Gaal is targeting a move for Jan Oblak, and wants to sign the Slovenian before letting David De Gea return to the Spanish capital and complete his dream move to Real Madrid.

However, like themselves letting De Gea leave, Atletico are reluctant to see the 22-year-old go, the Mirror report, and thus it may require a hefty bid to get him to move to Old Trafford.

The former Benfica man joined Diego Simeone’s side last summer, and found his opportunities restricted to the Copa Del Rey and a couple of Champions League games for most of the campaign, while Miguel Moya was preferred in La Liga as Atleti attempted to defended the title they won in 2014.

However, an injury to Moya in March allowed Oblak to cement a place in the first team. And he took advantage of the opportunity, being on the losing side just twice – to Real Madrid and Barcelona – during his 14 games between the sticks following his rival’s injury.

Nevertheless, he will have a monumental task on his hands should he move to the Premier League, unless van Vaal decides to persevere with Victor Valdes – who made a brief impression at the end of last year – and use Oblak as his understudy until the 33-year-old decides to hang up his gloves.
