New Real Madrid boss targets Arsenal defender as first signing

New Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez has apparently told the club that he wants to make Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny his first signing of the summer, according to the Daily Express.

The former Liverpool boss took over the reigns at the Santiago Bernabeu from Carlo Ancelotti on Wednesday, having left his post at Napoli earlier in the week.

Real are looking to bounce back from a difficult campaign that saw them come away with no silverware to show, and Benitez’s brief will no doubt be to wrestle the league title back out of the hands of arch rivals Barcelona.

Los Blancos have already been linked with a number of players, including Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling and Juve star Paul Pogba.

However, reports in France are suggesting that Benitez has identified Koscielny as his prime target and hopes to partner him alongside Sergio Ramos in the heart of the defence.

The France international only signed a new contract extension with the Gunners last summer, but could be tempted to make a swift exit should the Spaniards lodge an official offer.
