McClaren turned down the chance to take over at the club for the final few games of Newcastle’s season last term, opting instead to stay with promotion chasing Derby County.

Carver remained in charge and oversaw the team’s survival by the skin of their teeth, but was given his marching orders earlier this week as the club looked to bring in somebody with more experience.

Carver’s assistant Steve Stone was also moved on.

McClaren has not been in charge of a Premier League side since he left Middlesbrough to take over the England national team job from Sven Goran Eriksson back in 2006, but has since managed successfully in Germany and the Netherlands.

And McClaren has already been told that he will have significant funds to invest in the squad during the upcoming transfer window as Mike Ashley looks to avoid another relegation threatened season.
