According to The Sun, the 25-year-old was closing in on a move to St James’ Park, following Chris Ramsey’s men’s relegation. However, news of Merseyside interest has meant that he has delayed deciding on his future.

But, The Sun suggest that Brendan Rodgers does not view the former Burnley man as his main transfer target. The Reds are in desperate need of adding more depth up front however, and while they’ve already added Danny Ings – pending a compensatory fee being agreed (via Daily Mail) – it it likely that he will be looking for more options if the performances of Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert, and Fabio Borini were anything to go by last season.

Meanwhile, Austin shone in his debut year in the top flight. He hit the back of the net 18 times, which – Daniel Sturridge excluded – was was 14 goals more than Liverpool’s trio of forwards managed in the Premier League. Without him, it seems likely that QPR’s relegation would have been confirmed a lot earlier than it actually was.

And it now appears that the Loftus Road side are resigned to losing him, with The Sun reporting that the club are lining up a £4m bid for Brentford youngster Andre Gray.
