Tim Sherwood’s five-step plan to revive Aston Villa: How charismatic boss can prove his salt this summer

4. Pick a goalkeeper and stick with him

Following Brad Guzan’s uncharacteristic error in the defeat to Manchester City in April, Sherwood rightly made the decision to remove him from the first team in favour of Shay Given. Guzan has single handedly saved Villa at times since being installed as the club’s number one, but his performances had notably dipped.

However, Sherwood needed to stick with a simple plan. One of his worst mistakes was throwing rookie Jed Steer into the mix against Burnley. With the FA Cup final on the horizon, the squad needed to be at its strongest to bounce back from the shellacking Southampton dished out. Given has done well since coming back in, but at 39 he is not the answer. Instead, Sherwood needs to bring in somebody that will truly push Guzan for his place. Manchester City have got the best out of Joe Hart by signing Willy Caballero, and there’s no reason why the Villans can’t do the same.
