Tim Sherwood’s five-step plan to revive Aston Villa: How charismatic boss can prove his salt this summer

2. Fix the wide areas

Following on from point three, Sherwood needs to ensure that his wide players are capable of doing what’s required of them. With the likes of Jack Grealish, Scott Sinclair, Charles N’Zogbia and even Gabriel Agbonlahor providing a creative spark and a goal threat, the full-backs behind them will need to be able to overlap and cover defensively.

Alan Hutton has been in fine form this term, but he cannot provide the same threat as leading assist maker (5) Leandro Bacuna does, but instead contributes to a sound defensive unit in a way the Dutchman cannot. Now while Sherwood doesn’t need to delve into the realms of Total Football, he does need to ensure that the players he has can do these jobs effectively.
