Tottenham have become the latest Premier League side to put Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke at the top of the transfer target list.
Tottenham Transfer Gossip
According to The Sun, Mauricio Pochettino is willing to battle against the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea for the Belgian, as he looks to bolster his attacking options.
The 24-year-old wants to leave Villa Park, The Sun suggest, and would be available for £32.5m, which would trigger the release clause in his contract.
However, the report states that none of the trio wish to pay anywhere near that amount for the striker, but Spurs may begin the bidding with an offer of £20m.
It is not the first time that Benteke has been on the White Hart Lane club’s radar, as he was the subject of a £25m bid two years ago, according to The Sun.
Like the Reds, Tottenham need to add some more depth up front if they wish to build upon their fifth place finish in the top flight. If it hadn’t been for Harry Kane, Spurs would have found things much tougher, as Pochettino would have had to rely upon the likes of Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor, who have both struggled in recent times.
And while things would have been slightly easier for Kane when he burst onto the scene – with no-one really expecting the impact he has made this year – this season, he can expect much more attention from defences well aware of his ability to find the back of the net.
Therefore, if the club can add the Belgian powerhouse – who was sent off when Villa and Spurs met in November – to play alongside him, they will surely pose more questions that the England international would on his own.
