Angel Di Maria’s torrid time in England is set to come to a conclusion this week, after the Daily
The Mirror report that the Manchester United winger will join the Ligue 1 champions for £45.9m, and will complete the move before both sides head home from their pre-season tour of America.
Louis van Gaal had previously wanted the 27-year-old to stay at Old Trafford despite his struggles (via Daily Express), but it now appears that he is resigned to losing the Argentinian, and has already planned for his departure.
The Mirror report that talks are ongoing regarding the potential signing of Barcelona winger Pedro, while the money made from the sale of Di Maria is likely to be used to fund a bid for Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller.
The news that Di Maria is on his way out of the club may disappoint United fans who felt that he had much more to give to the Premier League side. He showed occasional glimpses of the player that the club hoped they were getting when they paid £59.7m for him last summer (via Mirror), but failed to maintain any form.
So while Red Devils fans may have been hoping he would turn it around in the upcoming season, they may be relieved that his poor campaign has not dented his price tag too drastically, and his departure may now allow for new targets to be pursued.
