Arsenal’s ruthless performance in the Emirates Cup – where they managed seven goals in two games, with six going in against Lyon – may have given Arsene Wenger confidence that he does not need to spend upwards of £35m on the likes of Karim Benzema (via Metro),
According to the Metro, the Gunners are keen on sealing an £8.5m deal for Juventus forward Fernando Llorente, having only joined Premier League rivals Tottenham and Manchester United in the race to sign the Spaniard in the past couple of days.
The former Athletic Bilbao forward has struggled since his switch to Juventus Stadium two years ago. Nevertheless, he has still managed 23 goals in 65 Serie A appearances.
However, the Old Lady have signed both Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala this summer, which has seemingly left a large question mark over the 30-year-old’s future.
A potential deal represents a very small risk given the fee. With Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott looking strong ahead of the new season, Wenger did not necessarily need to throw the chequebook at recruiting a new striker when a goalscorer is available for as little as £8.5m.
