Chelsea are looking to beat off competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, and complete a deal to sign Napoli winger Jose Callejon.
According to the Metro,
The Spaniard enjoyed a good year at Stadio San Paolo, and scored 11 times in Serie A. However, it is not entirely difficult to understand why he wishes to leave during this window.
The club failed to qualify for the upcoming season’s Champions League, while two of their key players – Dries Mertens (via Daily Express) and Gonzalo Higuain (via Daily Express) – continue to be linked with moves away, which will severely lessen their chances in the future of challenging for one of the top spots in Serie A. And while the Express reports that Mertens plans to stay, his stance may change if the other two decide to jump ship.
Should Callejon decide that he wants to go, a Chelsea move could seem a very attractive prospect.
The Blues have built their side around the strength of the three that sit just behind the lone striker, and are usually able to offer a chance to shine on the biggest stage in Europe, having regularly qualified for the latter stages of the Champions League.
A switch would also allow Callejon to link up with Mourinho once again, having worked with the Special One during their time at Real Madrid.
