Aston Villa captain Fabian Delph has shocked fans by announcing that he is staying at the just just hours after he looked destined to join Manchester City.
A statement issued on the club’s official website confirmed that he would not be leaving the club and would instead be staying at Villa park to lead the team out for the new season.
“I’m aware there has been intense media speculation surrounding my future in the last 24 hours and I want to set the record straight,” he said.
“I’m not leaving. I’m staying at the football club and I can’t wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club.”

As yet, no reason has been given as to why the England international has gone back on his decision, though cementing a place in the national team at next summer’s European Championships could have played a part.
But whatever the reason, it will come as a boost to Villa fans and they can now look forward to seeing him line up alongside new signing Idrissa Gueye, who finally joined the club for £9m on Friday night (via Sky Sports)
