Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta has reportedly agreed a new one-year deal at the Emirates, despite missing most of last season through injury.
According to the Metro, respected journalist Kike Marin has claimed that the 33-year-old has agreed an extension.
The decision to award him a new deal seems slightly sentimental on the surface, but it may to be an astute move from Arsene Wenger.
Despite the fact that the former Everton man has not played since November, he remains the skipper, and thus is obviously looked upon as the kind of model professional that the abundance of talented youngsters that are coming through at the club, can look up to.
He does face a challenging task if he wishes to get back into the first eleven upon his return. His absence allowed Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla to form a brilliant partnership just in front of the back four. Given Arsene Wenger’s loyalty – which Arteta may now be the benefactor of – it seems unlikely that he will break up the pair.
