Joe Allen claims Liverpool stars nearly got the manager the sack while Rodgers admits he drove £49m winger away

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has said that Brendan Rodgers should have been given the boost last summer, and a less tolerant set of owners may not have been so forgiving.

Speaking with the Daily Express, the Welshman says it would have been all the player’s fault had the manager been given the chop.

Following a limp attempt to back up their surge to second place in the 2013/14 season, the Reds slumped to a 6-1 defeat away to Stoke on the final day of last season, leading to Rodgers keeping his job but seeing his back room staff gutted and replaced with fresh faces.

“Yeah, of course, some owners may have been less tolerant after the way the season went,” Allen said.

“But the players we’ve got here are all honest players who take responsibility.

“At the end of the day, we were the ones who let the supporters, the manager and the staff down — and ourselves down as well.

“It’s as simple as that.

“So it’s up to us to get back out there and get back to the levels we know we can reach.”

Elsewhere, speaking at a press conference during the club’s tour of the Far East, Rodgers himself admitted that he probably played a key part in driving Raheem Sterling away from Anfield.

Sterling joined Manchester City in a £49m deal earlier this week, amid rumours of a breakdown in the relationship between the two.
