Liverpool hoping to beat Manchester United in race to sign Pedro

Liverpool are planning to make a last ditch attempt to persuade Barcelona winger Pedro to turn down a move to Manchester United, and instead become the latest name through the Anfield door.

According to the Daily Express, the Reds have been in contact with the Catalan giants, and may be prepared to trigger the 27-year-old’s £22m release clause. The Express suggest that should the Merseyside outfit make an offer of that amount, a deal could be done quite rapidly.

However, the Express report that the Spaniard had expected to be on his way to Old Trafford, but his plans may be subject to a last minute change of plan.

Despite Liverpool’s apparent surge in the race, it could seem unlikely to some that Pedro would choose a switch to the club with Louis van Gaal’s side lurking. United are able to offer Champions League football next season, while the Reds are facing a campaign in the Europa League.

However, the signing of Roberto Firmino has proved that the project being undertaken at Anfield is an attractive prospect. The Daily Star reported that United were also interested in the Brazilian before he signed for Liverpool.

Red Devils fans will be hoping that history is not about to repeat itself.
