Here is Sunday’s news and gossip concerning Liverpool:
Despite being named in the squad for their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia, Raheem Sterling has been left behind as talks with Manchester City have reached an advanced stage, the Guardian report.
The Citizens’ third bid for the player is likely to be around £44m.
Former Reds hero Mark Lawrenson has branded the 20-year-old ‘pathetic’, as the transfer saga drags on, the Daily Mirror report.
He has suggested that the England international has not been entirely honest about why he wishes to leave.
“Sterling now needs to be honest. He needs to tell Rodgers once and for all that he wants to leave and the real reason why, because the player and his representatives keep changing their tune on that one,” he explained.
Sterling’s potential replacement has already seemingly been lined up, after the Daily Star reported that a £22m bid for Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev has been made.
The Russian has not played for the club in the league, but enjoyed a promising loan spell with Villarreal last year.
However, their hopes of signing Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke have suffered a hit, after the Daily Express reported that Manchester United entered the race to sign the Belgian.
The striker will be available for £32.5m.
Finally, the Reds have been boosted in their hopes of signing Barcelona winger Pedro, after the Catalan club reportedly lowered his release clause from £107m to £21.5m, the Daily Express.
Arsenal and Chelsea are also interested in the Spain international.
