Liverpool set to announce Jordan Henderson as new club captain

Jordan Henderson looks set to be given the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of Steven Gerrard, after the Daily Star reported that he is set to be given the captain’s armband.

It would not be a surprise should the former Sunderland man be given the role ahead of the new Premier League season, as he was previously given the responsibility when the club hero was absent during the last campaign.

However, the signing of James Milner suggested that there may be a twist. His experience at the very highest level, as well as the role he would fill in Brendan Rodgers’ side meant that he would be a more than worthy candidate to be the new skipper.

Rodgers has decided, though, to stick with Henderson, who has done an impressive job to turn his Anfield career around.

Having joined the Reds during the same window as Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam, and Jose Enrique, and the one following the acquisition of Andy Carroll, there was a fear that he would be discarded as a big money flop when he took a long time to settle on Merseyside.

However, unlike the rest who have gone – except Enrique who continues to lurk in the background – the midfielder has fought for his place in the side.

His reward for the honour could be trying to convince Raheem Sterling to either move on, or get on with playing for the club.
