Liverpool have made a surprising bid for Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez, which could see Mario Balotelli head back to Serie A after a difficult first year at Anfield.
According to the Daily Express, the initial deal would see the pair swap clubs on season-long loan deals. However, both sides’ willingness to rid themselves of their flop forwards may see a permanent deal completed further down the line.
The 30-year-old has endured a difficult couple of years with the Italian side, and managed just four goals in 20 top flight appearances during the last campaign, as the side missed out on qualifying for the Champions League, as they finished five points off third place Lazio.
However, his record seems prolific in comparison with Balotelli, who failed to prove his critics wrong following his £16m move last summer (via BBC Sport). The 24-year-old managed just one goal in 16 Premier League appearances, and found himself dropped from Brendan Rodgers’ matchday squad by the end of the campaign, as his patience appeared to finally run out.
While there is a danger that Gomez could play like the forward that has frustrated La Viola supporters over the past two seasons, it is unlikely that he will endure the difficulties that the Italian has gone through.
Reds fans will take confidence from the German’s goalscoring at former club Bayern Munich. He scored 66 goals in 91 Bundesliga appearances. If a deal goes through, and he manages a similar strike-rate, it is likely that the Kop will finally have a Mario they can be proud of.
