Louis van Gaal hoping to seal superstar signing, and reportedly plans to start with double deal for Barcelona pair

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has claimed that the Premier League side need to make a superstar signing if they wish to start winning trophies, and it appears from other reports that they may have already been lined up.

According to Sky Sports, the Dutchman claimed that while he already has a strong squad at his disposal, the side are missing that final bit of quality to elevate them back into a position where they are challenging for silverware, but he plans to rectify the situation during this window.

“[Ashley] Young and [Juan] Mata had fantastic seasons with assists and goals but to win the Champions League you need speed also. That is why I think, maybe, we still have to buy a player with speed and creativity,” he said.

The Red Devils have been linked with an audacious bid for former star and Real Madrid talisman Cristiano Ronaldo (via Sky Sports), and while van Gaal was unable to confirm or deny the rumours regarding the Portuguese attacker, speculation suggests that they are closing in on deals for two players from Los Blancos’ bitter rivals.

According to the Metro, the Old Trafford outfit have agreed a £23.1m deal for Barcelona winger Pedro. While the 27-year-old has struggled to make the impact he would have liked at the Nou Camp, he represents the kind of player that van Gaal admitted he was looking for.

He has unfortunately been a victim of being in the same team as the best front three in world football currently, so may well relish the opportunity to finally make his name, and he could be joined by one of his current teammates.

The Metro report that United are willing to trigger the £10.6m release clause of Adama Traore. The 19-year-old – who has a handful of appearances for the first-team – is most comfortable as a winger, but can also play as a striker.

That versatility should benefit his chances of being used by van Gaal, as while the English side have a cluster of exciting wide players, and may add another should they get Pedro, they have very few options up front.

And while his release clause may not suggest that he is likely to be a superstar in the future, the Catalan giants have let the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Gerard Pique leave as youngsters – having decided that they would probably not be good enough for the first-team – only to bring them back to the Nou Camp once they made their names elsewhere.

If Traore can follow in their footsteps, and United then manage to hold onto him, then the potentially incoming Barcelona pair may both become the superstars that Louis van Gaal was looking for.
