Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has said that new signing Memphis Depay can mature into a striker capable of replacement veteran hit man Robin van Persie, according to the Metro.
The 31-year-old striker is set to complete a £4.7m move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce at some point in the next 48 hours (via the London Evening Standard), leaving many wondering who will be replacing him.
United are already low on firepower up front. With RVP set to follow Radamel Falcao through the Old Trafford exit doors, they are left with just Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez as their only senior strikers, and the latter will be missing while he recovers from a broken collarbone.
But van Gaal is confident that United already have a capable replacement as Depay will transform into a formidable striker in the near future.
“It is for me a question mark because I have to see how we solve this problem,” said Van Gaal.
“It is also one of the reasons that we have bought Memphis because maybe you remember that he has played in the striker’s position in the Dutch team.
“That was also new for him. He learns very quickly. He can play in different positions and that is also a reason we have bought him.
“He is one of the greatest talents of his age.”
