United had recently been linked with a £24m move for the Argentine playmaker, with Atletico Madrid also joining them in their interest.

Atletico had viewed him as the ideal replacement for the soon to depart Turkish international Arda Turan.

But it now appears that both sides will be disappointed in their pursuit of the 27-year-old, who has confirmed that he has no plans to leave Benfica in the current transfer window.

“I am good at Benfica,” Gaitan told Portuguese paper Record. “I have a contract.

“During the holidays they said I would be sold, but today I am here.

“It’s always the same story.”

Last month Gaitan’s agent, Jose Irribaren, seemed to hint that a deal between United and Benfica could be agreed.

“Everything is possible, there is a deal with Manchester United,” he said.

“The will of the player is that everything goes well.

“We are waiting for a response from the vice-president, which is why I cannot say much more.”

Gaitan joined Benfica from Argentine giants Boca Juniors in 2010, and has since gone on to score 30 goals in 216 appearances across all competitions.
