Louis van Gaal has made Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke his top striker target this summer, after Liverpool backed out of the race to sign the Belgian.
According to The Sun, the Reds are not willing to trigger Benteke’s release clause, and their highest offer came £10m short of the £32.5m that Tim Sherwood wants for his key man.
The Sun suggest that Manchester United will have no problem paying that figure, as many of the other names on their list command even higher fees. The Sun report that the Red Devils have also looked at Thomas Muller, Gonzalo Higuain, and Edinson Cavani. However, with both the former pair’s value at well over £60m (via The Sun), van Gaal has decided to look closer to home.
The 24-year-old has a solid record in the Premier League, which is vital with the club looking so desperately thin in terms of forwards. With Robin van Persie heading for Fenerbahce (via The Sun), and Javier Hernandez being allowed to follow him out of the Old Trafford door (via Manchester Evening News), van Gaal could be left with just Wayne Rooney to call upon.
While he may want the superstar names of Muller, Higuain, and Cavani this summer, adding the depth of a proven Premier League goalscorer is vital if the club wish to be challenging for the title in the near future. If Benteke can put his injury problems behind him, he could be that man.
