The Express report that the Red Devils are set to receive £41.6m for the Argentinian from the Ligue 1 side, which would represent a considerable loss on the £59.7m they spent to bring him to Old Trafford one year ago.
However, it could – and arguably should – have been an even worse deal in United’s favour based on the campaign he endured. He scored just four times, with one of those strikes coming against lowly Yeovil Town in the FA Cup, and generally looked a completely different player to the one that had shone at the most recent World Cup.
The additions that Louis van Gaal has made so far this summer – most notably Memphis Depay – would suggest that the Dutchman has lost the majority of his confidence in the 27-year-old, and has packed his midfield with options in preparation for the former Real Madrid man to either spent the season on the bench, or leave the club altogether.
The latter option now seems inevitable.
