Southampton had been keen to hold on to the player this summer, and had even rejected a move for the France international midfielder last week (via the BBC).
But it now appears as though Louis van Gaal has got his man and will follow Bayern Munich icon Bastian Schweinsteiger to the club (via Daily Mail), and likely, to the United States for the pre-season tour.
Schneiderlin almost left Southampton last summer to join Arsenal (via Daily Express), but the Saints managed to hold onto him. However, he missed a significant portion of the pre-season campaign claiming that he wasn’t “mentally or physically ready” for the challenge (via the BBC).
His arrival will spell out a serious desire in United to climb back to the top of the English football tree. Last season the club were forced to play the likes of Phil Jones in makeshift midfield positions, but now they will be able to boast Schneiderlin, Schweisteiger and Ander Herrera in the middle now.
With Matteo Darmian and Memphis Depay already signed, van Gaal has shown that he is well aware of the deficiencies in the United squad and has set about fixing the problems.
