Newcastle closing in on £15m deal for QPR striker Charlie Austin

Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on a £15m deal that would see Queens Park Rangers forward Charlie Austin move to St James’ Park, according to the Metro.

The 26-year-old is wanted by several Premier League sides, including Chelsea and West Ham, but it appears that the Magpies are the ones that have won the race for his signature.

The news of his imminent arrival is likely to please the Toon Army, who had to watch their side struggle in front of goal last year, while the former Burnley man enjoyed a great first year in the top flight, despite Chris Ramsey’s men’s relegation.

Only one of Newcastle’s squad reached double figures in the Premier League goalscoring charts, while Austin managed 18 strikes, which accounted for nearly half of the Loftus Road outfit’s goals.

And Steve McClaren will be hoping that he is able to form a ruthless partnership – should the deal go through – with £15m signing Aleksandar Mitrovic (via Metro).
