Manchester United invite 16-year-old wonderkid defender to train with club ahead of move

Louis van Gaal may have already spent over £80m this summer (via Daily Star) as he tries to create a side capable of ending their wait for a trophy, but he is also keeping an eye on the future.

According to the Metro, Manchester United have invited New York Red Bulls defender Matt Olosunde to train with the Red Devils, ahead of a potential offer from the Premier League side.

The 16-year-old is able to play at either right-back or in the centre of the defence, and has played at various levels for the American national side.

Should he sign, the youngster is unlikely to find himself anywhere near the first-team just yet. Nevertheless, it is an encouraging sign about the project that van Gaal is trying to create that he is looking at players that are some way off being ready for the first-team. That strategy worked wonders for Sir Alex Ferguson during his tenure, and may be able to help van Gaal create something equally as effective during his time at the helm.
