Stoke City have emerged as the surprise candidates to sign Inter Milan winger Xherdan Shaqiri, after the Serie A side accepted a club record £12m bid from the Potters, according to BBC
The Switzerland international had only moved to San Siro in January, having endured a mixed three-year spell at Bayern Munich. While he enjoyed a lot of success at the Allianz Arena – being part of the side that won the treble in 2013 – he struggled to make his mark in the Bundesliga, despite his obvious talent.
However, things didn’t exactly improve once he had joined Roberto Mancini’s team. He could not inspire the side out of their disappointing campaign – scoring just once in the top flight – as they finished the season in eighth, and outside the qualification places for either European competition next year.
Nevertheless, his quality has been evident whenever he has played for the national side. During last year’s World Cup, he scored a hat-trick in a group stage match against Honduras.
But, it’s not the first time that Mark Hughes’ men have expressed an interest in the 23-year-old, with BBC Sport previously stating that they were keen on midfielder in January.
