Unattached international goalkeeper to undergo medical ahead of Manchester United move

Louis van Gaal has responded to his public spat with Victor Valdes (via Telegraph), by making a move for Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who will be available on a free transfer (via Metro).

The Metro report that the 28-year-old left his most recent side Sampdoria earlier this summer, and is set to have a medical at Old Trafford.

Roma are also interested in the stopper (via Metro), however, it appears that he is keen to once again link up with van Gaal, having worked with the Dutchman at AZ Alkmaar.

Following the row with Valdes, the manager has perhaps gone with a player he knows well so he can avoid another incident like it. The Metro report that he will assume Valdes’ role of back up to David de Gea.

However, BBC Sport report that the Spaniard could be on his way out of the club on a free next summer, with Real Madrid lurking, which may have forced van Gaal to go after a keeper capable of taking the gloves in the future.

Romero’s experience – with 62 caps for Argentina under his belt – would suggest that he can do the job, although it remains to be seen how content he will feel about sitting on the bench should de Gea see out the final year of his contract.
