Ajax director of football confirms Man United HAVE NOT made contact over Jasper Cillessen

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has confirmed that Manchester United’s move for goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen has been a non-starter, as the Red Devils have yet to make contact with the Eredivisie side, the Daily Express report.

Having worked with Louis van Gaal when the United boss was the Netherlands’ head coach – with van Gaal selecting Cillessen as his number one for last year’s World Cup – it was no surprise that the 26-year-old was being touted as David de Gea’s replacement should the Spaniard leave.

However, former Arsenal winger Overmars told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that the Premier League side had not been in touch about a move (via Express).

“There is no contact with Manchester United. I have heard nothing from Manchester United,” he said.

While Sergio Romero’s form in the first few games of the season suggested that he would be more than capable of filling the void, even if de Gea moved on. However, the Argentinian came in for some criticism at the weekend after he allowed Bafetimbi Gomis’ tame shot to go under him and give Swansea a lead that they would hold onto.

Should de Gea remain at Old Trafford beyond the window, van Gaal may decide to bring him back into the fold. But if he heads to Real Madrid, van Gaal may decide that he does need Cillessen after all.
