Arsenal and Man United target subject of £8m bid from Premier League rivals

Arsenal and Manchester United may now be forced to act if they wish to land Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, after the Daily Express reported that Southampton had made an £8m bid for the 24-year-old.

While the Express report that the Scottish champions may want more for the Dutchman, Ronald Koeman is hoping that he will be available for the fee offered as the Saints will be unable to use the centre-back in the Europa League this season.

However, the south coast side may have to pay considerably more if the Gunners or the Red Devils decide that they want to make their own bid for van Dijk.

While the former Groningen man is yet to play in one of Europe’s major leagues, he has established himself as one of the most exciting, and versatile defenders around.

He is more than comfortable with the ball at his feet, and has demonstrated an unexpected ability to run with the ball with the kind of pace and trickery that you would come to expect from a winger. He is also able to take a lethal free-kick, much like the current Southampton boss.
