Arsenal tried to sign Robert Lewandowski and Bayern Munich teammate earlier in summer

Arsenal reportedly made an astonishing attempt to bring both Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller to the Emirates this summer, according to the Daily Star.

The Gunners were hoping to exploit the strained relationship that both men share with Bayern Munich’s manager Pep Guardiola, the Star report, but were told by the Bundesliga champions that neither would be available during this window.

Had they received a different answer from the Bavarian side, they could have been forced to part with as much as £100m as the Star suggest that both players have been valued at £50m.

Had they managed to pull this sensational swoop off, there is little question that the north London outfit would have had to have been considered as the favourites to clinch the Premier League title this year.

Having secured the signing of Petr Cech near the very beginning of the window, there was little question that the area that most fans felt that they needed to strengthen was up front. In Muller and Lewandowski, Arsene Wenger would have been adding two of the most lethal forwards in Europe currently.

Sadly however, this move never got across the line.
