Arsene Wenger has insisted that he will not be making any panic buys this summer, the Daily
Despite controlling much of the game at the Emirates, the Gunners were punished as a header from Cheikhou Kouyate and a speculative effort from Mauro Zarate helped Slaven Bilic’s men take all three points in a game where Arsenal were expected to comfortably win.
Nevertheless, Wenger does not believe that any rash decisions – including those regarding new signings – would be beneficial, the Mirror report.
“I can only repeat what I’ve said: if an exceptional solution turns up, we will do it,” he said.
“We bought and still lost the game today. We listen to people but we have to focus on the quality of our performance,” Wenger added.
The north London side’s only buy so far this summer has been goalkeeper Petr Cech. However, it was the 33-year-old who has shouldered the majority of the blame for the defeat, following a couple of questionable decisions that led to both goals.
The first saw the former Chelsea man fly out of his goal in an attempt to punch the free-kick away, only for Kouyate to arrive first, while he also left his near post largely clear for Zarate’s strike in the second-half.
Despite the disappointing performance of their one marquee signing thus far, Gunners fans will be hoping that, even if this defeat is not the motivating factor, Wenger is not done in the market just yet.
The Mirror report that Karim Benzema has been linked with Arsenal, and while Cech was largely responsible for the defeat, the rest of the side came under fire for failing to turn their pressure into goals.
If the Real Madrid man had been playing, it is difficult to imagine that West Ham would have been able to keep a clean sheet.
