Chelsea hoping to seal move for Everton defender John Stones with third bid worth £30m

Chelsea are hoping that an improved third bid will be enough to land Everton defender John Stones, according to the Metro.

The Blues previously had their first offer of £20m, and their second of £26m turned down by the Merseyside outfit, but are planning to test the Toffees’ resolve with a third bid of £30m (via Metro).

Jose Mourinho wants the 21-year-old to be John Terry’s long-term successor, but Roberto Martinez has previously made it clear that he does not plan to let the England international leave Goodison Park this summer (via Daily Express).

Nevertheless, the Premier League champions’ latest offer is likely to tempt the club to at least consider letting go of their prized asset. But, the longer they take to decide whether to accept or reject the latest bid, the worse off the club could be.

With the new season just days away, clubs will try to ensure that they have no more business left to do, as – with the window deadline approaching – prices will tend to go up as selling sides sense the desperation from the bidding club.

While Everton could have £30m left to spend, they will be left with just one senior centre-back. And with clubs knowing that they will need reinforcements, they will have no problem asking for an astronomical price for one of their own players.

If the writing is on the wall, Martinez may be better off letting Stones move on now, so he has time to find a replacement.
