Chelsea told to pay £34m if they want Everton defender John Stones

Chelsea have reportedly been told by Everton that if they want to sign John Stones this summer, they will have to pay £34m, according to the Metro.

The Premier League champions have already made two bids for the 21-year-old – the second of which was £26m – but have watched both been knocked back by the Merseyside outfit as Roberto Martinez desperately tries to hold onto the England international (via Metro).

However, they have now named their price for the former Barnsley man, and the Metro suggest that Jose Mourinho is more than happy to make such an offer.

The Blues’ hopes of landing Stones may have been boosted following the Daily Mirror‘s suggestion that the Toffees had lined up Celtic’s ball-playing centre-back Virgil van Dijk as a potential replacement should the youngster head for the exit.

While the Stamford Bridge side were particularly ruthless at the back last season, they looked vulnerable at times against Swansea yesterday. The Swans brought a level of pace and trickery which asked a lot of questions of Chelsea’s experienced back-four. Unfortunately for them, they did not always have the answers.
