Everton boss Roberto Martinez insists John Stones is not for sale as Man United prepare £30m bid

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that John Stones will not be leaving Goodison Park this summer, after the Daily Express reported that Manchester United were preparing a stunning bid for the 21-year-old.

According to the Express, the Red Devils were hoping to secure the signature of the former Barnsley man by making a £30m offer, but Martinez has shut down any suggestion that the offer will be accepted.

“I have said before the player is not for sale and that is the end of it,” he said.

However, it is not just Louis van Gaal that is hoping to tempt Stones away from Merseyside this summer. The Express report that Premier League champions Chelsea have made two bids for the centre-back.

While Martinez is publicly digging his heels in, there is certainly an argument to suggest that should the two interested parties make an offer that is well over £30m, the Toffees would be mad not to consider it very seriously.

Currently, Everton have a very limited number of players that can play in defence. While losing Stones would deplete their options further, the money they would receive in return would allow them to strengthen in terms of depth.

However, the longer they hold out for a huge offer, the less time they will have to replace Stones should he make it evidently clear that he wishes to go.
