Former Everton legend Andy Gray believes defender John Stones will join Chelsea this summer, claiming he’d be ‘amazed’ if The Blues failed with a third bid for his services, the Metro
The England under-21 international has so far kept his head down throughout the ongoing speculation surrounding his short term future as it has been widely reported that Chelsea have already made two offers to sign him.
The Metro claims that Chelsea have already seen two respective bids of £20m and £26m rejected by Everton, while a third worth £30m is being considered.
Stones has been with Everton for two-and-a-half years now, but former Toffees striker Gray, who played for the club between 1983-85, believes the young defender will end up at Stamford Bridge by the end of the transfer window should Chelsea up their offer further.
“I would be amazed if, at the end of August, John Stones is still at Everton,” Gray told talkSPORT.
Gray believes that an offer in excess of £35m would be enough to tempt the Toffees into a sale, and claims that the money would surely go on to benefit Roberto Martinez’s side.
“It is still a work in progress for Roberto Martinez and if the bid is £35m to £40m I don’t think Everton can turn that down.
“I would be very surprised if Roberto hasn’t got something set up should the deal happen so he is ready to move when it does – and I think he will be ready.”
“Everton are not at the stage now where they can look at everything and say we don’t have to sell any of our players. We do, it is as simple as that, and I think it will happen.
“It’s sad but if £30million to £40million comes in and Roberto spends it well, there is absolutely no reason why Everton can’t benefit from it.”
