Italian journalist claims Karim Benzema has agreed terms ahead of Arsenal move

Even if Arsenal and Real Madrid have never spoken to each other about Karim Benzema, there is little question that his possible switch to the Emirates has become another dreaded transfer saga.

And in the latest twist, Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli has claimed that the Frenchman has agreed personal terms ahead of a Premier League move, and is set to sign a four-year contract which would see the 27-year-old pocket €9m per year.

Guilianelli has further claimed that the former Lyon man has informed those close to him that he is optimistic about the move to North London.

If the Gazzetta dello Sport writer’s reports are correct, then the Gunners have done a fantastic job of keeping news of the deal very quiet. Both Arsene Wenger (via Independent), and Santi Cazorla (via Daily Express) have played down the suggestion that the Madrid striker will be joining the club this summer. However, Arsenal fans will be hoping their attempts to quash speculation were simply done to dampen optimism until the deal was completely done and dusted.

If Wenger was to sign Benzema, it would be slightly out of character given the way he has approached the last two summer windows.

He has tended to go after one marquee name per window, with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez both being the sole big name to sign during the respective summers that they arrived.

Given their struggles with goalkeepers in the last few years, as well as his personal record, Petr Cech was arguably the marquee name of this window.

However, perhaps Wenger is planning to make an exception for Benzema.
