Louis van Gaal reveals David de Gea didn’t want to play for Man United vs Spurs

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has confessed that goalkeeper David de Gea did not want to play for the club during their Premier League opener against Tottenham last weekend, the Metro reports.

The 24-year-old watched United’s meeting with Mauricio Pochettino’s men from the stands after being left out following recent links with a move to Manchester United.

With just one-year remaining on his current deal, The Metro reports that the La Liga giants are keen to bring him back to the Spanish capital, but are also well aware they will be able to snap him up for free next year, too.

When he van Gaal announced that de Gea would not be playing, reporters believed the decision was his own, but the Metro now report that it was in fact the custodian’s decision to take a step back and watch the action from further back.

“We’ve talked with him and he fully agreed with our decision,” said Van Gaal.

“We have a goalkeeping coach, Frans Hoek, I’m not doing everything alone.

“Frans Hoek has a meeting with De Gea and asks him ‘Do you want to play?”

Van Gaal then revealed that he asked the ‘keeper what he wanted to do, admitting de Gea told him that he didn’t want to play before adding: “Then I have to take the decision. It’s a process. We had been observing him in preparation and he was not so good, he was not the same De Gea as before, he was my best player last season.”
