Manchester United give Louis van Gaal £73.4m to spend on new striker

Manchester United have reportedly given Louis van Gaal the green light to spend £73.4m on finding a new striker during the final days of the window, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the Metro report.

Despite scoring four goals during the second leg of their Champions League play-off tie with Club Brugge, there are serious concerns about whether the Red Devils will be able to maintain a Premier League title challenge with just Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez to call upon up front.

But the funds that van Gaal has been given should enable him to bolster his ranks before the window shuts.

And while Rooney’s form in the early stages of the campaign would suggest that the money would be better spent on bringing two forwards to Old Trafford, the captain’s hat-trick in Belgium should enable van Gaal to concentrate all of the money on bringing in one of the very best goalscorers in Europe.

Their biggest challenge may now be getting a deal completed before Tuesday’s deadline.
