Manchester United have become surprise contenders in the race to sign Schalke winger Julian Draxler, according to the Daily
The Express report that Louis van Gaal is ready to switch his attention to the World Cup winner after missing out on Pedro – who left Barcelona for Chelsea – while other targets Thomas Muller and Gareth Bale remain with their current clubs.
However, they face competition from several of Europe’s biggest sides if they want Draxler’s signature. The Express claim that both Arsenal and Chelsea are interested in the 21-year-old, while Juventus seem to have cemented themselves as the current front-runners, having made a £17m bid for the Germany international.
United do need more attacking depth as the transfer window’s closure looms, and while Draxler has been somewhat injury-prone during his short career, he is still young enough to adapt into a slightly different role, and could perhaps be moulded into the striker that the Premier League side are crying out for.
