Michael Carrick insists he is not leaving Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has insisted that he hadn’t even thought about leaving the club this summer, the Daily Star reports.

The veteran midfielder had been linked with moves to both Inter Milan as well as hometown team Newcastle United, but the 34-year-old has remained determined to remain with the Premier League title hopefuls.

Summer arrivals Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin will make competition for places even more strenuous, but the England international has revealed that he isn’t daunted by the prospect of fighting for his right to be in the starting XI.

“Yes, [but] it [leaving] is not something I thought about at all,” he said.

“It has never been an issue.”

Asked how long he thought he’d keep playing, Carrick replied: “At this stage, you just have to judge it year by year.

“Looking at the players who have been here in the past that is what they have done when they reached this age.

“They have gone year-on-year and played for a long time. At the moment I feel fine and great, it just depends how it goes.

“We have brought in some really good players this summer. There has always been that competition in the squad.

“There always has been even though people have been talking about buying a midfielder for many a year. There is always competition.

“That is what brings out the best in players. It has done over the years and I’m sure it will this season.”
