Sergio Ramos set to snub Man United and sign new Real Madrid deal

Sergio Ramos appears to have snubbed a potential move to Manchester United, after the Daily Express reported that the defender had agreed a new contract with Real Madrid.

Louis van Gaal had made the 29-year-old his top target as he looked to improve his defensive options, but the Spaniard is set to put any rumours about his future to bed by signing a deal that will keep him at the Bernabeu until 2020, the Express report. He stands to pocket £7m a year once he puts pen to paper (via Express).

While the news will disappoint many United fans who would have been hoping that the addition of a World Cup and Champions League winner would help them in their quest to challenge for the Premier League title, it is hardly surprising that he is set to stay.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand had previously questioned whether Ramos actually held an interest in moving to Old Trafford, or whether he was using the speculation to earn a better deal with Los Blancos (via Express), and it appears that he may have been proven right.

It should be a relief that this saga is now reaching a conclusion however, as it should allow van Gaal to concentrate all his attention on striking a deal for Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi.

The Metro previously suggested that the Red Devils boss was keen to complete a move for the Argentinian, and his motivation for brokering a transfer is likely to have been increased now another of his targets are out of reach.
