Sergio Romero wants David de Gea to stay at Manchester United, despite what it may mean for his position

Despite what it may mean for his own first-team chances, Sergio Romero has urged David de Gea to ignore interest from Real Madrid this summer, and stay with Manchester United, the Daily Express reports.

The Argentinian admitted that he does not know what the future holds for his teammate, but hopes that he stays at Old Trafford (via Express).

“The truth is that I have no idea if De Gea is going to Real Madrid. But for me I hope that he stays here because he’s a good team-mate who always works hard and that is best for the group,” he explained.

Despite de Gea enjoying a wonderful season last year, Louis van Gaal has left the Spaniard out of the squad for every single game so far this campaign, instead choosing to start with the former Sampdoria man. The Express claim that the Dutchman believes that de Gea’s head is not in the right place following speculation over a move.

Should the 24-year-old listen to Romero and decide to stick around beyond this window however, it may well see the current number one relegated to the bench, as the Express suggest that van Gaal plans to re-evaluate de Gea’s position if he remains beyond the summer.
