Arsenal hoping to beat Tottenham to signing of 18-year-old international striker

Arsenal are hoping to see off competition from north London neighbours Tottenham in the battle to sign Basel star Breel Embolo, according to the Daily Express.

The 18-year-old is valued at £10m (via Express), and may feature for Switzerland in their European qualifier against England on Tuesday night.

While Spurs were reportedly interested in brokering a potential deal for the promising youngster during the transfer window, the Express suggest that the Gunners’ interest is much more recent.

Arsene Wenger’s side were punished for failing to add a single outfield player during the summer after it was announced that striker Danny Welbeck would be out until Christmas due to knee surgery (via Express).

That news may have prompted the Arsenal manager to look into potential alternatives to sign in January, which would allow the former Manchester United man all the time he needs to fully regain his fitness.

Embolo has a very encouraging goalscoring record for someone that only made their professional debut in 2014 – having scored 13 goals in 38 games for the Swiss champions – and has Champions League experience.
