Arsenal legend brands Gunners’ pursuit of Karim Benzema ’embarrassing’

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has claimed that the Gunners were left humiliated after failing to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, according to the Metro.

The 27-year-old was often touted as the answer to Arsene Wenger’s side’s attacking problems after being linked with a switch to the Emirates for much of the summer (via Metro). However, speculation was quashed when the Frenchman sent a Tweet confirming that he planned to remain at the Bernabeu, and Wright believes that Benzema’s snub was an embarrassment for his former side.

“The Benzema thing was quite embarrassing,” he said.

“The way that they pursued it. If you’re trying to get a player like that you find out straight off the bat ‘are you interested in coming?’ If you’re interested, we’ll pursue it.

“I thought the way they dealt with that was pretty bad in the end and the way he mugged Arsenal off in the end on Twitter, it wasn’t good,” he added.

Benzema’s defiant message on social media summed up a very frustrating summer for the Gunners, who had to watch their rivals go out and splash the cash, while they largely stood still – barring the arrival of former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.

That exasperation has probably been heightened since the start of the season. While Arsenal have made a decent start, they have scored just five goals in the Premier League, while Benzema has scored two from his first two La Liga games of the campaign.
