Barcelona great Lionel Messi calls Man United star a ‘once in a generation’ player

Four time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has heaped praise upon Wayne Rooney, after the Manchester United skipper became England’s all-time leading goalscorer, according to The Sun.

The 29-year-old brought up his half-century of international goals with a penalty against Switzerland, and in the process, overtook Sir Bobby Charlton as the country’s highest scorer. And Messi believes that the accolade highlights how special a player Rooney is.

“Rooney is for me a once in a generation player,” he said.

“One of those special players, who is not comparable to any other.

“There are many special players, but Rooney has exceptional quality and technical ability as well as being one of the strongest players I have faced, with an exceptional workrate,” he added.

While the Barcelona great certainly believes that the former Everton man is one of the best around, there is still a debate about whether Rooney should be allowed to take his place among the pantheon of greats.

His ability to maintain a consistent level throughout his career has been a major factor behind his success, but many will suggest that he has often been unable to produce his best form on the biggest stage, with only a handful of his international strikes coming at major tournaments.

But when Lionel Messi is suggesting that you are a legend of the game, there can surely be little argument.
