Chelsea tried to sign experienced Benfica star Luisao on transfer deadline day

Premier League champions Chelsea reportedly made a last ditch effort to sign Benfica stalwart Luisao on transfer deadline day, according to the Metro.

The Blues have been linked with a new centre-back all throughout the summer, with the Metro highlighting their apparent pursuit of the likes of Everton’s John Stones, Paris Saint Germain defender Marquinhos and Argentina international Ezequiel Garay at various points throughout the window.

In the end, though, The Blues ended up signing Nantes stopper Papy Dijlobodji and Reading’s Jamaican international Michael Hector (via BBC), but a report in Portugal daily O Jogo is claiming that Mourinho only moved for Dijlobodji after failing with a bid for Luisao.

O Jogo suggest that Chelsea were keen to bring in the veteran 34-year-old, but were put off by his apparent £14.7m buy out clause (via Metro), so opted to move for Dijlobodji instead.

Luisao may be a top class defender, making over 300 appearances for the Lisbon-based giants during a 12-year spell, but at 34 it’s hard to see what exactly he’d give the side that John Terry cannot.
