Manchester United have been handed a major boost ahead of their clash with Southampton this weekend, after Louis van Gaal confirmed that Wayne Rooney is available for the game at St Mary’s, according to the Daily
As well as confirming that defender Phil Jones is back in training, the Dutchman explained that the skipper missed the game against PSV Eindhoven as they did not want to take the chance and face losing him for even longer (via Express).
“Wayne is fit to play,” he said.
“He’s only had one week out. It was because we weren’t taking any risks with him.
“Phil Jones has come back and trained with the group for the first time.
“He’s not match fit but he’s fit to train,” van Gaal added.
The 29-year-old may not have enjoyed the best of times in the Premier League this season, having not scored a single goal in the top flight, but with a lack of striker options currently available to van Gaal, his return will be warmly welcomed.
Since his last appearance for the Red Devils, he has removed the pressure that came from being on the verge of becoming England’s all-time leading goalscorer, so may find that his performances for his club improve as he is able to go under the radar a little more.
