Man United consider triggering Chelsea target’s £36m release clause

Manchester United are considering the possibility of triggering the release clause of Chelsea target Jose Gaya, according to the Daily Express.

The interest in the Valencia man comes in the wake of Luke Shaw’s injury, which is set to rule him out for the next six months after he had his leg broken during the Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven (via Express).

However, Gaya is one of the La Liga side’s brightest stars, making it seem very unlikely that they will be willing to accept a bid for the player, especially in January, when it is notoriously more difficult to find an adequate replacement.

That may mean that the Red Devils will have to trigger his release clause, which was increased from £13m to a staggering £36m when he signed a new five-year deal with Los Che in May (via Express).

While Gaya’s potential suggests that he is inevitably going to be a part of the Spanish national side in the future, it does seem a slightly strange move to make, especially during the January window.

By that time, Louis van Gaal will have been without the former Southampton man for over three months, which would mean that unless there are any complications with his recovery, Shaw will not be too far away from returning.

Thus, the Dutchman will be spending £36m on a man that will enjoy a couple of months in the side before having to fight for his place with a player that most would agree has enjoyed a much better campaign at Old Trafford this season.

It would make much more sense to go after Gaya during the summer, when it will have become clear whether Shaw is able to return to the level he was previously at.

However, if United are in the title picture come January, then the conservative strategy may go out of the window, and the £36m man may well be brought in.
